This year will be special for those associated with Chemistry-A European Journal for many reasons. Not only does 2007 mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the publishers John Wiley & Sons, Inc. but it is also a notable year for several of our society partners. In the last 200 years, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has come a long way since Charles Wiley first opened a small printing shop in Manhattan in New York City in 1807.

It is now one of the leading academic and scientific publishers in the world with a range of leading brands in its professional/trade; scientific, technical, and medical; and higher education divisions. A detailed history of the key events in this fascinating 200-year period is provided as a supplement directly after this Editorial. The French Chemical Society (SocietØtØ FranÅaise de Chimie) was founded 150 years ago, and this event will be marked by a special symposium in Paris in July (see http://www.sfc07.fr). The German Chemical Society (Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft) was founded 140 years ago, and the Hungarian Chemical Society will celebrate its centenary.
