✦ Synopsis
An investigation of the wave propagation characteristics of pipes with ¯uid loading on both the inside and outside of the pipe is described. The eects of the inner and outer media have been investigated by considering a copper pipe with air or water on both the inside and outside of the pipe. The eect of viscosity has also been demonstrated for a castor oil-®lled copper pipe in air. The dispersion characteristics have been computed assuming a real frequency and complex wavenumber and have been compared with experiments. Good agreement has been obtained between the experiments and predictions for all combinations of ¯uid on the inside and outside of the pipe.

An external circumferential piezoelectric transducer is introduced which detects the radial wall motion of fluid filled pipes. Ideally, the transducer is sensitive only to the axisymmetric \(n=0\) waves associated with the longitudinal shell motion and the internal pressure wave The sensitivity to t
