โœฆ Synopsis

An external circumferential piezoelectric transducer is introduced which detects the radial wall motion of fluid filled pipes. Ideally, the transducer is sensitive only to the axisymmetric (n=0) waves associated with the longitudinal shell motion and the internal pressure wave The sensitivity to these two wave types is calculated and compared with measurements. The relative sizes of these two wave types for various boundary conditions are also calculated. For many practical circumstances the transducer is predominantly sensitive to the internal pressure.
