✦ Synopsis

The performance of circular microstrip patch antennas is presented where the conducting patch and ground plane are constructed from a grid. Impro¨ed cross polarization, mode suppression, and bandwidth are possible, but are accompanied by lower gain and reduced front-to-back ratios. A computer simulation re¨eals the current structure. The density and shape of the grid pattern are important parameters. Such antennas are can be manufactured within glass laminates.

Edge feeding of a circular patch antenna by a microstrip line has been achieved by utilizing the circumferential variation of the field which is fixed by loading the patch. However, loading splits the degenerate modes and gives rise to cross-polarization. Three different techniques are presented to

The L-shaped probe is shown to be an excellent feed for the thick circular patch antenna. The substrate used is a foam layer of thickness about 10% of the operating wa¨elength. An impedance bandwidth of 24% and an a¨erage gain of 7.5 dBi are achie¨ed.
