✦ Synopsis

Graft copolymers of acrylonitrile and of acrylic acid monomers on cellulosic materials were obtained by use of ceric ion initiator in aqueous medium at a 50% (w/w) cellulose-monomer ratio. The variations of polfiacrylonitrile) grafts and of the efficiency of grafting with ceric ion concentration, and of polfiacrylic acid) grafts with temperature are examined. The dependence of water retention capacity of the grafted fibers with the graft level is reported.

Acrylic acid (AA) was grafted to cellulose by using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) initiator in aqueous nitric acid solution at 30, 50, 70, and 90ЊC during reaction periods of 30 to 180 minutes. About 45% of the AA was polymerized at 90ЊC after 180 minutes. The grafted polymer and homopolymer were iso
