Results are reported from a survey of counselor education programs approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

The survey focused on counselor training in the addictions.

ersons who are abusing or dependent on substances, as well as those affected by such persons, experience serious consequences as a result of their substance abuse (Doweiko, 1993; Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, 199 1). In their professional helping roles physicians, psychologists, counselors, and others frequently encounter such individuals (Dahlhauser, Dickman, Emener, & Lewis, 1984). Trained professionals can be invaluable resources in confronting this critical social problem.

However, reports continue to indicate that the helping professions have been slow to respond with quality training in this important area. Current training and education of helping professionals in the addictions may be inadequate (Chappel
