Abstract
Glutamate dehydrogenases detected in tissue extracts of a broad sample of coelenterate species all require NADP(H) as a coβsubstrate, rather than being capable of using either NAD(H) or NADP(H). In this respect, the coelenterate phyla appear to be unique in the animal kingdom.

The NADP-specific glutamate dehydrogenase of a high B-lactam producing industrial strain of Penicillium chrysogenum was purified to homogeneity. The enzyme (M, = 339000 f 34000) was demonstrated to have a homohexamer quaternary structure with a subunit molecular mass of M, = 56000 f 2000. The N-term
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the presence or absence of NADP-specific glutamate dehydrogenase does not affect inhibition of sporulation by ammonia, suggesting that the inhibition is not mediated by this enzyme.
As an initial step in our study of nitrogen metabolism in the coral/algal symbiosis we have purified glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.4) to homogeneity from polyp tissue of the staghorn coral Acropora formosa collected from Magnetic Island (North Queensland) in 1985-1986. The purified enzyme had a
