ccording to a Press Release dated 14th August, "The activities of two GEC-Marconi businesses are being merged to form a Materials Technology Group. The businesses involved are the Plessey Research Labs at Caswell and GEC-Marconi Materials Ltd at Towcester, which also has a development and manufacturing operation in San Diego."

The GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Group, MMTG, will focus on four primary technologies:

  1. GaAs technology to support GEC-Marconi in the businesses of satellite TV, advanced automotive products and future phased array radar and EW systems.

  2. IR materials for uncooled sensors used in fire detection systems, intruder alarms and advanced imaging technologies both civil and military.

  3. Optoelectronic technology for advanced communications, data transmission, sensors and signal processing equipment.

  4. Radar absorbent materials, RAM, and radar
