✦ Synopsis
Interests in waste-to-energy projects are intensifying in China, boosted by the government's effort to promote the use of renewable energy. China's Renewable Energy Law, passed in early 2006, provides various incentives to encourage companies to set up biomass power plants and develop greener fuel technologies. KIE, a business unit of Keppel, has been awarded a S$13.5 M ($8.6 M) contract by Chinese company Tianjin Taihuan Recycling Resources Utilization for the use of the former's Selective Non-Catalytic Reaction technology to run the Tianjin Taihuan's waste-to-energy project. The technology works by converting acidic nitrogen oxide into non-hazardous nitrogen. The next process involves incinerating waste to produce energy, which is then used to generate electricity.
