## Introduction to Urban Geosimulation Geosimulation is a catch-all title that can be used to represent a very recent wave of research in geography. In a broad sense, the field of geosimulation is concerned with the design and construction of object-based high-resolution spatial models, using thes

β¦ Synopsis
System Theory, Geography, and Urban Modeling
This chapter serves two main purposes. First, it provides a general overview of complex system theory, focusing on aspects of relevance to urban modeling. Second, it offers an investigation of the achievements and failures of a first wave of urban modeling, that dating to the period between the 1970s and 1980s. The chapter is not intended as an indepth review of complex system theory, nor does it exhaustively examine urban modeling and simulation over that period. Rather, the intention, in this chapter, is to look at how the methodology of complex system theory was used to specify a first generation of urban models, and to understand what came out of this work. Our book is about models that belong to a second generation with origins in the 1990s and 2000s; the review in this chapter is limited to establishing a background for purposes of comparison-between a ''traditional'' approach and a new geosimulation approach.
