The history of the magnetron is surveyed, starting with its inception in the United States in 1921 as a diode of academic interest . Further development is traced through the intensive investigations in wartime England which culminated in the utilization of the magnetron as a high-power resonant cavity device . Its return to this country in 1940 and the resulting expansion of practical microwave radar is mentioned . The contributions of many early workers in the field are discussed with frequent references to their original papers.
