## Abstract A new gain improvement technique for L‐band EDFA is presented. It uses an unpumped EDF in a double‐pass configuration in order to effectively suppress and completely exploit the backward ASE. Compared to a conventional single‐pass amplifier, the gain coefficient can be improved from 1.5

✦ Synopsis
The partial double-pass L-band erbium-doped fiber
amplifier with enhanced gain characteristic is demonstrated using
a band pass filter (BPF). The BPF is incorporated in the
double-pass route to suppress the amplified spontaneous emission
from the single-pass output for gain enhancing. The gain of
51.5 dB is obtained for the proposed amplifier at input signal
power of -40 dBm, which is approximately 5.2 dB higher compared
with the system without the BPF. However, the insertion loss of
the BPF contributes to a small noise figure penalty in the system.
This amplifier can be easily modified to support dense wavelength
division multiplexing system application by using multiple channel
BPFs or interleaver.

## Abstract A gain‐clamped long‐wavelength‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (L‐band EDFA) based on a ring‐laser cavity is demonstrated using two C/L‐band wavelength‐selective couplers. This new design provides improved gain characteristics and high tuneability. The gain is clamped at 11.5 dB with
The two-stage L-band EDFA with partial double-pass (DP) system is compared with the full DP system. The partial DP system has a higher gain and lower noise figure at small input signal power compared with the full DP system. The small signal gain and noise figure are obtained at about 31.2 dB and 6.

## Abstract We theoretically investigate the gain and noise figure of an L‐band gain‐flattened EDFA obtained from the one‐stage single‐pass, one‐stage double‐pass, and two‐stage double‐pass configurations. Compared to the one‐stage single‐pass scheme, the two‐stage double‐pass amplifier provides ga
