โœฆ Synopsis

On June 7-8, 1990, a meeting/workshop on Future Directions in MRI of Diffusion and Microcirculation was held in Bethesda, Maryland. This workshop was sponsored by the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the In Vivo NMR Research Center of the National Institutes of Health and chaired by Denis Le Bihan with cochairmen Robert Turner, Jay Tsuruda, and Leon Axel. This 2-day interactive workshop was intended to provide a forum to discuss the state of the art of MRI of molecular diffusion and blood microcirculation. An interdisciplinary faculty, including leading clinicians, physiologists, and physicists in this field, discussed the use of MRI in the imaging and measurement of diffusion and perfusion in tissues and the significance of these parameters. They examined aspects of MRI in diffusion/perfusion studies ranging from basic physics and physiology to clinical applications in order to clarify questions remaining to be answered and directions of future research and to evaluate potential clinical applications. The format of the meeting consisted of overviews, followed by panel discussion and exchanges with attendees. In this special section of

## Abstract The CO~2~ fraction of an anesthetized rat's breathing mixture was changed (from 0 to 10%) to attempt to change the brain microcirculation and observe these changes in diffusion measurements of the neural tissue. Brain apparent diffusion coefficients were measured to be (0.71 ยฑ 0.01) ร— 1

The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the diffusive behavior of water in biological tissues. The analysis shows that obstructive barriers would have to occupy very large volume fractions in order to account for the reduction in the diffusion coefficient (D) observed in biological sy
