The rate constants of triplet-triplet annihilation were measured in anthracene single crystals with various degrees of damage. It was found that, as with the singleexcitonic triplet decay rate, the doubleexcitonic triplet decay rate is severely affected by the presence of crystal defects. The experi

✦ Synopsis
Triplet-triplet
fhrorescence spectra have been measured following excitation into the St state for eight anthraccnes For those molecules in which near-infrared 3Bau -3B,o absorption has been reported, the @-0 band wavelength in absorption and fluorescence agrees well. Hoaever. the quantur?i yield of triplet-triplet emission in anthracene is more than a hundred times weaker than that predicted from independent measurements of Ta -Tt radiative and non-radiative decay rates. In general. halo-anthracenes exhibit considerably stronger triplet-triplet fluorescence than do the phenyl and methyl derivatives; the origin of this apparent interval heavy atom effect is unclear. The suggestion is made that more than one higher tripIet state is intimateIy involved in the St -T intersystem crossing of anthracenes.

In this note we report the polarization of the well known triplet-trip@ absorption of anthracene in the 4500 -4100 A region and the assignment for the total space symmetry of the upper state. The short lifetime of the anthracene lowest triplet state makes this determination slightly more difficult t
The lowest triplet state infrared spectrum of matrix-isolated anthracene between 1650 and 550 cm-' is reported. The seven triplet state bands were tentatively assigned based on frequency proximity to ground state absorptions and comparisons with triplet state features in similar molecules.
