โฆ Synopsis
Hoare and Coutelen ( '33) have dividcd on morphological arid developmental grounds the mammalian trypanosomes into 2 large groups : Group h (lewisi group) and Group B, subdivided into the evansi, vivuax, congolemse, and brucei subgroups. It has been shown in a previous paper (von Brand and Johnson, '47) that the respiration of members of Group A is strongly inhibited by cyanide, while that of the blood stream form of several representatives of the eemzsi and Drucei subgroups was riot inhibited but rather stimulated by this poison. Because the line of division coincidecl with clifferences in the action of drugs on the various species, thus indicating a possible connection between chemotherapeutic response and respiratory enzyme systems, it appeared desirable to extend these studies to some other trypanosome species.
