โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Fundraisers have long worked under the notion that performance and evaluation should be separate from and unrelated to compensation. Yet as competition increases for effective and experienced development professionals, an increasing number of practitioners are finding themselves in new compensation arrangements that reward them fully or in part for their performance. The following pages report the results of a survey mailed in July 1999 to 40 fundraisers in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. Although only seven of the 27 respondents reported current compensation arrangements that pay them fully or partially for performance, 21 reported a preference for such scenarios. What is more, the survey found that those at the top of the largest fundraising operations function under the most nebulous job descriptions and are more eager than others for regular feedback and performance reviews. Finally, survey results show that fundraisers are thoughtful, motivated by tangible and intangible rewards, prefer structure to guide their work, want frequent performance reviews and would like greater uniformity across their profession.
