Friedel-Crafts heteroarylation of (hetero)arenes: A facile entry to 4-(hetero)aryl quinazolines and quinolines

Anhydrous AlCl~3~‐mediated heteroarylation of various arenes and heteroarenes with 2,4‐dichloro‐quinazoline (1) and 4‐chloroquinoline (4) afforded exclusively 4‐aryl/heteroarylquinazolines (3) and 4‐aryl/heteroarylquinolines (5), respectively. Compared with the available synthetic protocols, aluminum chloride induced CC bond formation is direct and convenient to access bis‐(hetero)aryl quinazolines and quinolines. The products were obtained in good to excellent yields by this method. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2009).
