✦ Synopsis
No alternating copolymers of vinyl acetate (VAc) and butyl acrylate (BA) were obtained by free radical copolymerization in the presence of GeCl 4 and (compared with the acrylic acidÈvinyl acetate copolymerization BCl 3 system). By ultraviolet spectral analysis, it was concluded that both and BCl 3 can form complexes with butyl acrylate. The complex constants GeCl 4 BAÈBCl 3 were determined by 1H NMR ; (25¡C). The reason for the gel forma-K B \ 33É2 tion in the copolymerization system was discussed. When vinyl BAÈVacÈBCl 3 acetate reacted with cationic polymerization probably occurred. A white BCl 3 , gel product probably resulted from the polymerization of the complex. BAÈBCl
