✦ Synopsis

No alternating copolymers of vinyl acetate (VAc) and butyl acrylate (BA) were obtained by free radical copolymerization in the presence of GeCl 4 and (compared with the acrylic acidÈvinyl acetate copolymerization BCl 3 system). By ultraviolet spectral analysis, it was concluded that both and BCl 3 can form complexes with butyl acrylate. The complex constants GeCl 4 BAÈBCl 3 were determined by 1H NMR ; (25¡C). The reason for the gel forma-K B \ 33É2 tion in the copolymerization system was discussed. When vinyl BAÈVacÈBCl 3 acetate reacted with cationic polymerization probably occurred. A white BCl 3 , gel product probably resulted from the polymerization of the complex. BAÈBCl

The free-radical copolymerization of styrene with butyl acrylate was carried out in benzene and benzonitrile at 50°C. Differences between the apparent reactivity ratios determined in this work and those previously reported in bulk indicated noticeable solvent effects. This is explained by a qualitat

Two novel trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) monomers were copolymerized with either ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) or vinyl acetate (VAc) in a redox-initiated aqueous emulsion: 1-(2-phenoxyethoxy)-1,2,2-trifluoroethene (Ph-TFVE) and 1-[2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethoxy]-1,2,2-trifluoroethene (Et-TFVE). Previous studies d
