fragile-X syndrome were compared w i t h t h o s e of 3 groups of c o n t r o l s u b j e c t s ; 497 school boys, 15 males w i t h non-specific mental retardat i o n , and 15 w i t h Down syndrome. Compared w i t h t h e c o n t r o l males, there was an increased frequency of r a d i a l loops, whorls, and arches on t h e f i n g e r s and of t h i r d i n t e r d i g i t a l p a t t e r n s and abnormal creases on t h e hands, and a decreased frequency of u l n a r loops and f o u r t h i n t e r d i g i t a l p a t t e r n s i n t h e p a t i e n t s w i t h t h e fragile-X syndrome.
