✦ Synopsis

Mode I stress intensity factors for a symmetrical lug with a through radial crack emanating from the internal boundary were evaluated with finite element techniques. A new geometric conhguration was developed which saves a minimum of 60% in computer time over the traditional configuration. The effect of interference fit and slip fit was investigated by comparing the results obtained for two different loading conditions; point force and uniform bearing pressure distribution, of which, pin loading yields the larger stress intensity factor. A means of estimating the residual life is also presented.

The present standards for fracture mechanics testing are originally developed for the testing of plain material, and it is now widely accepted that the procedures must be revised when weldments are tested[l-31. The present papers highlights two aspects of fracture mechanics testing of weldments (par

The influence of fracture mechanics theory upon the engineering design of structures is studied from the crack growth rate equation. This equation is integrated and the life of a structure, since a crack is found by inspection until it can cause the structure failure, is calculated. Also, the depend
