✦ Synopsis


ONE MIGHT expect that the habits of thought developed by the study of control systems would result in control specialists seeking to maximize the value of their own final product.

This final product is not mathematics or curves from computers. These are steps in a sequence. In one important field the final output--the quantity to be maximized--is the growth of industrial production per unit cost. The figure illustrates that choice of control and desi~ma are only parts of the process of making automatic control for a customer.
