Abstract
There is increasing interest in foods and ingredients claiming benefits for satiety and food intake control. Approaches to food product development include use of โtraditionalโ nutrients and reducedโenergy formulations, and possible โfunctionalโ ingredients, for which the level and quality of supporting evidence varies. The underlying scientific principles and some examples are briefly reviewed here. Careful attention needs to be given to the quality of science and interpretations being used to develop and substantiate claims, especially for new innovations.
