✦ Synopsis
A method for measuring diffusion coefficients in liquids is described. The diffusing substance S is radioactively tagged. At time zero it is concentrated at the bottom o f a vessel containing the diffusion medium M. During the experiment it moves through M by diffusion towards a GEIGER-MULLER tube. From the total number of counts registered as a function of time a time lag L is determined which is characteristic for the experiment. The value of the diffusion coefficient D is calculated from L and from the thickness d of M. For tristearin in triolein we find (with a confidence level of 95%) D = (7,57 & 0,83) * cm2/sec.
