โœฆ Synopsis

Dear Sirs,

In their letter, Lee and Ruthven [l] demonstrate that several equations in the papers referred to have been derived by other authors, too. This is necessarily true, b&cause these other authors started from the same physical model, which is called the "unreacted core model". Not only the authors mentioned by Lee and Ruthven used it, but also other ones, because it is quite common in the field of reaction engineering. The basic equation ( 12) in Part II of our paper, e.g. was already derived by van Meel

A theory describing the flow within a bubble rising in a fluidized bed is given for both twoand three-dimensional systems. The theory is then related to the effect of bubbles on a fluid/solid reaction in a fluidized bed and three possible models for the fluid flow are outlined, from which it is poss

Harrison and Leung model for spherical bubble formation in fluid&d beds has been extended to account for the dynamics of the emulsion phase. The simplified Davidson-Harrison model is used to obtain the gas and particle velocities in the emulsion phase sad includes the effect of the bubble oressure.
