โœฆ Synopsis

Decomposition flames of isopropyl nitrate and n-propyl nitrate have been stabilized upon their liquid surfaces at atmospheric pressure. Temperature distributions and reaction .product distributions have been measured through the flame zones. Suggestions have been made concerning the earliest degradation reactions giving rise to the many products observed in the flame front. The type of mechanism previously proposed for the ethyl nitrate flame degradation will describe quite adequately the appearance of practically all oยข the many observed ingredients o] the propyl nitrate flames. The nitric ester is attacked by nitrogen dioxide and nitrous acid which abstract a methyl group or a hydrogen atom, leaving an unstable residue which breaks down spontaneously, with frequent regeneration of these active species to continue the chain.

The decomposition rate constant of i-PrI under conditions of very low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP) is completely consistent with the well-known high-pressure Arrhenius parameters and the RRK(M) theory. The decomposition of n-PrI under the same conditions proceeds via two pathways, the anti-Markownikoff
