First Report of Fertile Antithamnion pectinatum (Ceramiales, Rhodophyceae) in the North Adriatic Sea (Lagoon of Venice, Italy)

✦ Synopsis

Antithamnion pectinatum (Montagne) Brauner in Athanasiadis et Tittley has been found in the Lagoon of Venice on populations of Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt and Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, two species recently arrived in the Lagoon. This species has been previously reported in the Mediterranean Sea from the Etang de Thau (France) with sterile thalli. Now tetrasporophytes, male gametophytes and female gametophytes with carposporophytes have been found. The vegetative features of the Italian specimens were compared, from a morphological viewpoint, with the original description and the data reported from France in 1988.
