β¦ Synopsis
In this letter. we give analytic expressions for the j-dependent line-shift in the first order due to collisions which change the direction of angular momentum of the radiator-without changing its energy. Gordon [l], in a numerical trajectory calculation, appears to be the first to point to the existence of this effect and has called it the reorientation effect. Since our results are given in closed-form they permit correlation of this effect with various terms in the intermolecular potential. All the calculations [2-73 which have sought to explain the pressure dependent [8-111 shifts have ignored this effect.
We start with the observation that the lineshift cross section 's the imaginary part [12,13] of the pressure-broadening cross section.
