✦ Synopsis

BACKGROUND.

Clinical and radiologic assessment of parotid masses cannot distinguish reliably between benign and malignant lesions. The utility of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of parotid masses at a cancer referral center (where clinicians may be especially adept at diagnosing parotid gland malignancies) remains controversial.

METHODS.

Between January 1986 and June 1996, 482 parotid glands were resected at the University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). A preoperative FNA result was available for 147 of these resections (30%), (corresponding to 154 preoperative FNAs). The results of 154 consecutive preoperative FNAs were compared with the corresponding histopathologic diagnoses.

Crile and Hazard reported in 1953 a follicular pattern of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Little has been said about this pattern in the cytologic literature. From more than 8,000 thyroid aspirates in our files, we reviewed all those diagnosed as ''follicular variant of papillary carcinoma,'' ''suspect

We report a case of salivary duct carcinoma arising from a pleomorphic adenoma (ex pleomorphic adenoma) in a parotid salivary gland of a 70-yr-old man. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy showed two distinct subsets of cells. There was the typical biphasic pattern of pleomorphic adenoma consisting of blan

We performed a specimen fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of a littoral cell angioma (LCA) from a 33-yr-old male who underwent elective splenectomy due to thrombocytopenia secondary to Wiscott-Aldrich syndrome. A case of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the parotid gland region in a 38-yr-old woman is reported. She had a 1-yr history of a large, firm, and slightly tender left parotid-region mass. CT scan showed an invasive tumor involving the parotid gland, mandible, infratemporal fossa, and p

Inflammatory liposarcoma is an unusual variant of well-differentiated liposarcoma. We report on the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology findings of a retroperitoneal well-differentiated inflammatory liposarcoma from a 63-yr-old white female. The smears showed numerous dispersed inflammatory cells,
