โฆ Synopsis
Fifty Years of The University of Texas MIDl Anderson Cancer Center and the Study of Carcinogenesis This year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Since its inception in 1941, M. D. Anderson has been a leader in the study of carcinogenesis. Although the original staff of M. D. Anderson consisted of only four scientists and a business manager, the first research publication from the new cancer center appeared in 1943 and dealt with the chemistry of nicotinamides, which were just being recognized as associated with cancer [l]. The importance of research in the history of M. D. Anderson was recognized in an early history of the institution 121: Research at the M. D. Anderson Hospital for Cancer Research began in December, 1942, when the initial four-member research team borrowed from the Galveston Medical School set up makeshift laboratories. . . . Thus, when The M. D. Anderson Hospital for Cancer
Research first began functioning, it was not a hospital at all, but a facility for basic research pertaining to cancer.
