Abstract
The dependence of the logarithm of the relative ionisation constant, log K~rel~ = log (K/K~unsubst.~), on the reciprocal of the dielectric constant (Wynne‐Jones relation) is discussed for various substituted phenols, thiophenols, anilines and N,N‐dimethyl‐anilines. Although the plots deviate from linearity, the slopes, Δ log K~rel~/Δ(l/D), may be considered as proportional to the field effect of the substituent. Log K~rel~ for 1/D = 0 (intercept with the y axis) still contains a residual field effect in addition to the inductive and mesomeric effects, as the reciprocal of the effective dielectric constant is different from zero.
