β¦ Synopsis
The influence of tidal flux on the microbial populations in salt-marsh creeks was investigated. The characteristics of the water masses were demonstrated by the use of statistical analyses of the physical-chemical factors influencing the microbial community. Pearson's r, Kendail's T, as well as simple and multiple regression analyses demonstrated the unique character of the water masses during ebb and flood tides. Water entering the creeks with a rising tide was characterized by a distinct absence of significant linear relationships between the variables, while significant associations were indicated in ebb-tide water. Particulate organic carbon was an important variable only during a falling tide.
