โœฆ Synopsis

The visual discrimhlation considered as a complex type of conditioning has recently become an important tool in the psychopharmacological investigations in rats (tiC,T, 1961; ~V[ACKI~qTOSH~ 1965). A facilitating effect of strychnine on the visual discrimination has been shown by Ms GAVGH and THOMSOn (1962) using a two choice apparatus and by PETRn~OVICK (1963) with a more complex technique. Similar results were obtained by HUDSPAT~ (1964) who used an apparatus with two doors differently illuminated. In a previous report we described a facilitating effect of nicotine on visual discrimination (Bov~T-NITTI, 1965). The action of this drug has been further analyzed in the present paper.

In three experiments we examined the role of homecage environmental stimuli on learning an aversively motivated spatial discrimination task in I I-day-old rats. Varying the presence and absence of nest shavings in the correct and incorrect arms of a T-maze in Experiment 1 revealed that nest shavings
