Abstract
An ultrathin composite film containing anionic AgβHis complexes (His: LβHistidine) and oppositely charged BHβPPV was fabricated by means of the electrostatic layerβbyβlayer selfβassembly technique. UV/Vis spectra showed a continuous deposition process of AgβHis complexes and BHβPPV. The film structure was characterized by using smallβangle Xβray diffraction, AFM, and SEM. The nonlinear optical properties of the ultrathin film were studied by using the Z__βscan technique with a laser duration of 8 ns at a wavelength of 532 nm. The film sample exhibited a strong nonlinear saturated absorption, with an__ Ξ±~2~ value of β3.9Γ10^β5^ mβW^β1^ and a selfβdefocusing effect with an n~2~ value of β4.78Γ10^β12^ m^2^βW^β1^.

Third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, k3) of symmetrically octa-substituted metalfree phthalocyanine thin films measured by the third-harmonic generation technique are reported. The metal-free hthalocyanine has been found to show a 3) ( -3w; 44 m) value as large as 7 . 7 3 ~ lo-'\* esu at 1.
Elucidating the relationship between electronic structure and the first and second molecular hyperpolarizabilities, p and 7, respectively, is of major importance in the quest for organic materials sufficiently optically nonlinear for applications in electro-optical and all-optical devices.['-31 For
