✦ Synopsis

Third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, k3) of symmetrically octa-substituted metalfree phthalocyanine thin films measured by the third-harmonic generation technique are reported. The metal-free hthalocyanine has been found to show a 3) ( -3w; 44 m) value as large as 7 . 7 3 ~ lo-'* esu at 1.80 pm. The figure of merit, $"/a, was estimated to be 4.17X lo-'' esu cm at 1.05 pm and 6 . 9 7 ~ esu cm at 1.65 pm. Both linear and third-order optical properties of Iiquidcrystalline metal-free phthalocyanines are discussed.
