โฆ Synopsis
The effect of the binding of K รท salts (KC1 and KF) in methanol on the expansion of poly(ethylene oxide) chains was investigated by measurements of intramolecular excimer formation rates and fluorescence lifetimes in pyrene end-labelled poly(ethylene oxide). The results are relevant in showing that the anion of the salt plays a role in determining the magnitude of the chain expansion, fluoride ion promoting the greater effect. An interpretation of the effect is given in terms of the operation of specific factors (besides coulombic) on the process of anion accumulation in the vicinity of the positively charged chains after K + binding.
