✦ Synopsis

A technique for solvmg tixe Hartree-Fock equations is proposed v&u& has the property that the virtual orb&& from trle ground state wavefunctlon are variatlonally correct approximations to the self-cons!+ tent orbltais for the excited states. This allows a whoie series of excited state wavefunctIons to be obtamed from one calculatxon Tlus method was applmd to a number of iow-lymg sulglet and trlpIet excited states of H30, ar.d found to fead to good results.

For some lower-lying excited states of NH3 and H20, ab initio SCF calculations indicate the presence of potential maxima in the paths leading to dissociation into NH2 +H and OH +H. The occurrence of these maxima is probably connected with changes in the highest occupied molecular orbital during diss

Ab initio calculations for a series of excited states of the HZ02 molecule have been performed in order to discuss some recent photofragmentation experiments with laser light. For understanding these experiments the direction of the transition moments is of great interest, as well as the possibility
