The excitation-transfer reaction N2(A 'Z: ) and CS molecules has been studied in a fast-flow reactor at 300 K; the excitation rate constant is (1.8';::) x10-l' cm3 molecule-' s-'. Excitation to the CS(a) state is favored over excitation to the Cs(a 'II) state. Excitation transfer from S( 'P) to S( '

✦ Synopsis
The reaction between N,(A3Zz, u'= 0) and SO(X 3x-) has been studied at room temperature_ The total quenching rate constant is (1.2*0.2)X10~'" cm3 molecule-' s-l and the SO(A3U) excitation rate constant is (OJf0.2)~10-'~ cm3 molecule-' s-'_ Al&ough these rate constants have some absolute uncertainty because of the diffkuhy of measuring (SO], the SO+ N,(A) excitation-transfer reaction appears to be an efficient system for utilizing the energy of the metastable N,(A) state. Less extensive results also are presented for excitation transfer between N,(A) and s(X). The totat quenching rate constant is z 6x10-1'

A theoretical analysis is given for the excitation transfer of Xe('P,) +N, (X IX ,') + Xe ( 'SO) + N, (B 'Qy). The analysis is based on (i} pure Coulomb interaction coupled with electron exchange and (ii) spin-dependent interaction between the collision partners. Both mechanisms can account for the
