✦ Synopsis

Excess molar volumes V E m and speeds of sound u were measured for {1,4-dioxane

The values of u for the various mixtures were used to calculate the apparent excess speeds of sound u and the isentropic compressibilities ΞΊ S . The excess isentropic compressibilities ΞΊ E S have also been calculated from the values of ΞΊ S . The values of V E m and ΞΊ E S have been found to be negative throughout the entire composition range for the mixtures of C 4 H 8 O 2 and CCl 4 , or CHCl 2 CHCl 2 or CCl 3 CH 3 . For {xC 4 H 8 O 2 + (1 -x)CHCl 3 }, V E m has been found to be negative at lower values of x, and positive at high x values with an inversion of sign occurring at x β‰ˆ 0.85, whereas the ΞΊ E S for this system has been found to be positive at low x values and negative at high x values with an inversion of sign occurring at x β‰ˆ 0.65. The values of u, V E m and ΞΊ E S have been fitted to a Redlich-Kister type equation.

The speed of sound in six binary mixtures (1,3-dioxane, or 1,4-dioxane + 2,2,4trimethylpentane, or benzene, or tetrachloroethene) was measured at T = 298.15 K. Isentropic and isothermal compressibilities and isochoric heat capacity were estimated from the speed of sound by using the excess volume, e
