✦ Synopsis
The intensity loss in the REMPI spectrum of the F 'A( u=O) state of HCl was shown to be caused by indirect predissociations. The predissociation hypothesis was verified by a pump-and-probe experiment which revealed that the action spectrum of the Cl photofragment has the same rotational state dependence as the intensity loss in the HCl REMPI spectrum. A deperturbation analysis shows that the intensity loss of the F 'A state is caused by L-uncoupling and spin-orbit perturbations by the predissociated C'II(v'=2) andb311(u'=3) states.
