✦ Synopsis
The biomimetic cycZization of I-epi-gaZZicin ('8) into the e-(lB,Sa)-guaianolide ( 15) is carried out. The stereospecificity of the cycZization is explained in terms of a preferred reacting confonation ( 13). The LvZogenetic implications of this process are discussed.

H NMR data are reported for methyl trans-/3-(2-, 4-and 5-substituted-3-thieny1)acrylates. The assignments of the proton resonances are based on spin-spin coupling constants and substituent chemical shifts.
