✦ Synopsis


The mass spectra of cold ( 100 K), large (250 < n< 10000) aluminum clusters show 60 oscillatory features which seem to be associated with octahedral shells and subshells of atoms. The number of atoms in each oscillation is equal to the number of atoms needed to cover successively larger triangular faces on close-packed octahedra.
