โœฆ Synopsis


All program development models include evaluation. Accreditation standards include evaluation. Outcome studies, performance criteria, accountability standards, and competency requirements all include evaluation. Evaluation is one of the areas that we talk about, think about, and research, but progress in continuing medical education (CME) is modest. We do not yet have models to test the way a physician performs except in select studies, and we do not yet have models to determine the changes that CME activities yield. This issue of the Journal is designed to begin a discussion about evaluation. To form a backdrop, we have included articles that summarize some of the literature, outline the kinds of evaluation models in education that might be helpful as a theory base, and describe what we might learn from undergraduate and graduate medical education.
