โœฆ Synopsis

The sugars in wood hydrolysates were fermented to ethanol using PachysoLen tannophitus.

Batch fermentations were complete within 36 hours using unaerated cultures at 11 g/l yeast concentration. A Pinusradiata"beer" medium containing mostly xylose gave 0.33 g ethanol/g sugar consumed. The yield from an aspen hydrolysate containing a mixture of hexose and pentose sugars was 0.43 g ethanol/g sugar consumed.
