β¦ Synopsis
Since 1956, we have isolated many strains of hydrocarbon-assimilating microorganisms from oil brine, natural gas, oil fields, natural gas fields, and from aircraft fuel and studied the met, abolism of hydrocarbons by Candida rugosa (IIZURA et al. 1964a, b, 1966, 1968, IIDA and IIZUKA 1969). On the other hand, while investigating the fungal utilization of hydrocarbons, we found the ester formation from %-alkanes by fungi isolated from aircraft fuel.
I n regard to ester formation from hydrocarbons, S T E W ~R T et al. (1959a, b) and STEVENSON et al. (1962) have found fatty acid ester formation from malkanes by bacteria. Recently, SHIMAHARA et al. (1967) have isolated six bacterial strains producing ester and two strains producing both acid and ester from hydrocarbon mixtures. However, the ester formation from hydrocarbons by fungi has not yet been demonstrated.
The present paper deals with the ester formation from m-alkanes by fungi isolated from aircraft fuel in 1961.
