✦ Synopsis
The volatile oil of Nepeta teydea Webb. & Berth., has been analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The essential oil derived from the leaves of Nepeta teydea harvested prior to flowering is characterized by a high content of 4acu,7~~,7acu-nepetalactone (89.54%) and by a much lower percentage of other components. Whereas oil extracted from the leaves and flowers collected once flowering had commenced contains as main components: P-pinene (7.87%), 1,8-cineole + limonene (14.67%), camphor (5.94%), cu-terpineol (12.64%) and smaller amounts of nepatalactone diasteroisomers as well as nepetalic acid and 5,9dehydronepetalactone. The tendency of nepetalactone to hydrolyse is also mentioned.
