Radiation-induced free radicals held in the matrix of organic solids are extremely stable, as evidenced by lyoluminescence studies of the solids, even a long time after irradiation. Stability contributed by their being held in the matrix has been studied by annealing with not much evidence Gf decay

The ESR spectra obtained from mechanica!ly degraded polystyrene have been ascribed to specific end-and chain-radicals. Studies of a-deuteropolystyrene indicate that, at low temperatures, the end-radicals predominate but, as the temperature is raised, these convert to the chain-type.
