Radical cations of both chlorotrifluoroethylene and bromotrifluorocthylene produced by y-irradiation of solid solutions of halocarbon matrices were detected and identified by ESR. The experimental spin density distributions strongly suggest that these radical cations have a planar structure with the unpaired electron in the bonding x orbital of a" in C, symmetry.
