✦ Synopsis
Light photolysis of a Rb-THF solution in the presence of cryptate, serving as a complexing agent, results in an ESR lineshape which strongly depends on the light intensity, attributed to a superposition of the photoelectron eihoto and the loose ion pair (Rb cryptatd, e-)_ An analysis in terms of the radical pair mechanism is presented. 1. introduction The photoionization of alkali metals dissolved in THF results in the production of several species according to the reaction hv M--M' + ephoto - (1) Reaction (1) represents the primary photoact in its simplest form without elucidating the detailed structure of the two pammagnetic species [l-4].
As to the photoelectron, ephoto, which is manifest in ESR experiments as a single line at g = 2, there is evidence to suggest that this species cannot simply be ascribed to the solvated electron e&, which is sometimes observed in the absence of light irradiation conditions. The exact nature of e-hot0 with respect to spin dynamics depends stron J y on the alkali metal. In potassium solutions the photoelectrons are observ-
