โฆ Synopsis
Showa Denko making progress on new fuel-cell separator, catalyst
Tokyo-based Showa Denko is making ground in the commercialization of a high-performance, thin-walled separator for fuel-cell use and a lowcost niobium-based catalyst as an alternative to expensive platinumbased catalysts. The company's latest carbon separator has a multicomponent binder system and is less than 0.1 mm thick. Showa Denko currently makes its separators at a 1000 unit/mo plant within the Production Technology Center in the Okawa area of its Kawasaki plant. The company's niobium-based catalyst features high specific surface area and superior corrosion resistance. The material's oxidation/reduction potential almost equals that of platinum. Shipments are slated to begin in 2009, with a market debut around 2015.
