Abstract

Stress corrosion crack velocity and stress corrosion threshold stress intensity have been measured for 18Cr–10Ni–0,5Ti stainless steel in relation to environmental variations. These studies showed that both stage I and stage II growth rate dependence on K are influenced by environmental variations. The chemical composition of the solution being tested, the corrosion‐active components concentration and temperature that influence corrosion kinetics, all influence SCC susceptibility through their effects on overall film stability and localisation of corrosion. The influence of environmental factors on protective film stability was suggested to be an explanation for different values of stress corrosion threshold stress intensity found for different test conditions.
